Wow, this was a powerful piece. Many things can change a person's outlook on life, and in an ideal world nobody would have to go to war to see things for what they really are.

I really respect you, Jeff, and I strive to learn from you and others like you as much as I can to hopefully better myself and the people around me. I feel like I've learned a lot from reading this piece.

Thanks for setting a great example.

Type your comment here. first, thanks for going and serving, for doing instead of talking. Next, thanks for the life lessons because they mean more coming from you than from anyone else on earth. You're the right man for the job, so keep writing. Anyone ever tell you that good writing is painful? yep, it is. But worth every inch and ounce of struggle.

You nailed it with the alien buttocks. You brought back from Iraq a perspective on life that few control freaks figure out till it's too late to make a difference. By then the kids are ruined, marriages smashed, and 10,000 windows into the mystery of meaning are blown to hell.

Don't let the fire go out, Jeffrey. Ordinary mortals, left to our own devices, get so damned caught up in the days preoccupations that we lose sight of bigger truths. We need a truth whisperer.
