Make Your Router Xbox Live Compatible

Posted by Midnight on January 30th, 2007

NAT

Have you ever unsuccessfully tried to find a friend’s game on Xbox Live even though you knew it was there? Have you ever been unable to join a friend’s XBL game when he sent you an invite? Have you ever been in a pregame lobby and been unable to hear the voice communications of other players? I think we’ve all experienced problems like the ones above. They are frustrating to encounter and even more frustrating to troubleshoot. However, most problems of this nature can be traced to NAT (Network Address Translation). Read on to find the solution.

What is NAT? From a helpful page on xbox.com:

When multiple devices share a single Internet connection (a PC and an Xbox 360â„¢ system, for instance), the networked devices typically rely on Network Address Translation (NAT) to prevent information traffic jams.

Routers with different NAT settings don’t like to talk to each other. Think of this like high school cliques. The most snobbish NAT setting is “strict.” Routers with this setting are like Abercrombie and Fitch models. In addition to being unusually thin, they are extremely discerning in whom they talk to, and when a router with a NAT setting of “open” asks to connect, it’ll probably get rejected. The “open” NAT setting is the most forgiving. Think of routers with this setting like a bus station skank. Yeah, it may catch a disease once in a while, but it sees a lot of action. It doesn’t reject anybody, and besides its monthly trip to the clinic for free profilactics it’s always available for online gaming. Somewhere in the middle is the NAT setting of “moderate.” Routers with this setting are like the kids that live at Hot Topic. These routers are very mysterious and often grow up to produce indie punk rock into their early thirties. Nobody really knows what’s going on inside the “moderate” setting. It’s more strict than “open” and it’s more open than “strict.” Exactly what level of noncompliance trips the switch to “moderate” is anybody’s guess. Here’s a handy chart of what NAT settings can talk to each other.

NAT

The bottom line is that if your network uses a router the following is probably true:
1. It needs to use NAT.
2. NAT may cause Xbox Live connectivity problems.
3. You can fix the possible problems by tweaking a few settings.

How do you determine if NAT is the source of the internet gremlins that are stealin’ yer voice packets? One of the easiest ways is to see if your router has been certified by the Xbox team as Xbox Live compatible. This is a free program Microsoft offers to network equipment manufacturers to help them get their equipment XBL compliant. The company sends the Xbox team sample equipment and the Xbox team works with the company to get their router within spec. After it is compliant, the company can sport the “Xbox Live Compatible” logo. See the list of certified Xbox Live compatible routers here. If you are one of the many people who’s router is not on the “officially approved” list, like myself, then read on.

Power on your Xbox 360, boot to the dashboard, and pull up the “network settings” tab. Perform the “Xbox Live Connection Test” and note the last field at the bottom of the screen for “NAT.” If you connect successfully and the NAT value returned is “moderate” or “strict” then it is probably the source of your woes. As you can see below, my router returned a setting of “moderate.”

NAT

Microsoft has a support page to help you with your NAT settings. The prescribed solution is to “open” the following ports on your router:
• UDP 88
• UDP 3074
• TCP 3074

By “open” I mean forward traffic on those ports to your Xbox 360 console. First, you need to find the local IP of your Xbox 360 console. You can get this from the network settings tab in the dashboard. It’s probably 192.168.x.x Now, login to your router’s admin panel. If you’ve never done this, refer to your router’s user manual. It’s not difficult at all. If you’re absolutely too lazy or unable to find the manual, try the following:

1. Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser’s address bar. If that doesn’t bring up your router’s admin panel try 192.168.1.100 or 192.168.2.1
2. When you get the login screen for your router try the following common default user name/ password combinations

UN: admin
PW: admin

UN: admin
PW: blank (I mean literally, leave it blank)

PW only: blank

3. The above attempts are a last ditch effort because you won’t google your router’s model number, so stop complaining that it doesn’t work for you.

After you get logged in there are a plethora of settings to screw up…err… tweak. You’re looking for a setting that says port forwarding, virtual servers, UPnP forwarding, or something similar. Bottom line is find a screen that looks like the one below, and enter the above settings in addition to your console’s IP address. As you can see, my console’s IP is 192.168.2.3.

NAT

Hit apply, submit, or whatever button is applicable and see if you broke anything. Nothing on fire? Good. Rerun the Xbox Live Connection Test in the dashboard and see if it improved your NAT setting. In my case, my Belkin router has a cool setting called “DMZ” under the firewall settings. It allows me to effectively place one local IP address (device) outside the NAT settings of the rest of the network. It appears to be specifically inserted for situations when the “NAT feature is causing problems with an application such as a game.”

NAT

I’m not worried about the risks of someone hacking my Xbox 360, because if they do they’ve made a huge discovery and will be blogging about it at xboxscene.com anyway. I told it to exclude my Xbox 360 from NAT, reran the test, and my NAT setting changed to “open.” Woot!

NAT

These directions won’t work for everyone. Actually, there’s a decent chance that you’ll screw something up during this process and temporarily kill your XBL connectivity or even your internet connection. If you do, just find the hard reset button on your router (this will return the router to default settings) and cut your losses. You also may need to restart some or all of your networking equipment for the new settings to take effect. This is as easy as unplugging the device from AC power and plugging it back in. Networking is a mystical art full of surprises. Dive in, change some settings, and figure out what’s happening inside that Pandora’s Box of packets. There’s nothing you can do that $60 and a trip to Best Buy won’t fix.

I’m sure this will be very useful for a lot of people.

FYI: Midnight Hour one year anniversary this month, no?

Thanks for the pity comment, Matt. I think this type of stuff is just far outside my reader base’s scope of interest. Now, had I cracked a joke about someone breaking their hip, that would have garnered eight or more comments.

The one year anniversary of my blog was actually in late January. Thanks for reminding me. I had forgotten.

Extremely well written guide. Been having this annoying problem for a rather long time now. Giving this a whirl, hopefully everything will work out now *crosses fingers*

Thanks again

Great stuff, however it didn’t work for my Linksys WRT54G. This was a major help though.

Your WRT54G is on the official XBL compatible router list (see link above)! It’s probably your firmware. The link says you must be running either version 3.01.3 or 3.03.6 If your firmware is out of date there is probably an autoupdate option in your router settings.

I have a WRT54G. There are several versions of it and not all of them are on the list, assuming I read it right. My v5 is not on the list, and the latest firmware for it is 1.01.xxx. I have not run the tests though so I don’t know how the NAT on mine is configured. There is a firmware update page on the router, but you have to download the *.bin manually.

Thanks for the clarification, Rev. I forgot to make the distinction between versions.

As a matter of fact, it was the firmaware. I was in need of an update. After the firmware update, XBL was running nice and smooth with open NAM. Thanks a lot!

I have a WRT54G as well my starting ip address is 192.168.1.100, how do I find my consoles IP address, because I entered the one above as Linksys directed me to, but it simply isn’t doing anything. I also downloaded the latest firmware and completely turned the router firewall off to no avail. Great guide by the way.

Find your Xbox 360’s IP address:
1. Pull up your 360 dashboard
2. System tab
3. Network settings
4. Edit settings
5. IP address is displayed on the right.

very very helpful even a computer illiterate like me had my xbox running perfectly with this guide thanks a ton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As soon as I had the correct IP address it worked like a charm, can’t thank you enough!

Thanks for the tip on the belkin router it really helped me i got the n1 which was a problem at first but they managed to get the right software and it came already in the new firmware. me and my friend always played since the first xbox and never had a problem with the linksys and when i upgraded i started playing with him and i could not private chat with him or anything i also called microsoft and they told em to restart and restart and whatever. it is best that ourselves as individuals can solve our own issues because we count on the companies to do it and its done wrong all the time.

I fuckin love you :)

Thanks for the info, it’s really usefull as my xbox claims I have a strict connection. My router settings page however, looks different to that (Also belkin)

thank you at last a site that runs through it simply i sooo crap at tech things on a pc but this was easy did not no you could us dmz 4 xbox 360 now every things open gears of war here i come thank you

awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the most annoying thing for me thus far, is that I have a fair understanding of networking, and thought it was ok that my crusty old ADSL 1 modem had NAT setting of strict with my 10 port Dlink switch.

So I looked up Xbox compatibility page, and found this:

BEFSR41 (v3) 1.04.8, 1.05.00 Wired only

So I bought it. The Firmware version of 1.04.8 is very old, and mine is the latest. It is wired only and everything is same as Xbox said. However, I have changed the DMZ, I have done port forwarding, and have done EVERYTHING I am aware of to fix this NAT sh#t, and its still strict. Now im $80 down on a stupid piece of plastic I didnt need!!

Can anyone help me please! im going insane. I called Xbox assistance and have never spoken to anyone so rude in my life. I spoke to Linksys, and they were even more rude. Im on the verge of throwing my almost totally useless xbox 360 off the top of a building.

I have an older ADSL Dlink modem (model 300 something) plugged into my Linksys BEFSR41. Could it be my Dlink modem that is creating a NAT setting of Strict? it cant be the router!

Please, please help!

ok i have a problem i follow all these steps but, i don’t remember my username or password i put in when i first installed my linksys router what can i do to find this information?

HEy, awesome job on the write up. Now for the true test- actually playing the game to see if it does the trick!

John:

The problem is definately the ADSL “modem”… they aren’t actually modems at all as the connection is digital all the way through, they are actually routers, and have NAT built in to them.

The fix is to connect to the modem and change the NAT settings as described in the guide. If it’s sufficiently old, you will have to telnet into it and change it through the command line, as they did not have web interfaces.

In my first aDSL setup I had a Cisco router (modem) and changing the settings was extremely difficult. If you aren’t tech-savvy my suggestion is to first call your ISP and see if they can help you change your settings, and if not, see if they can upgrade you to a newer modem, most of which have web-based configuration interfaces.

i have WRT54G also and i cant find where u are soposed to put your consol ip and all that stuff

k so i found where im soposed to put all the information in but what info should i put in im a little nervis to just start throwin random shit in there

Niec job with the site–I have a small problem with the port forwarding issue maybe you can help with. When I enter the settings as suggested with my Belkin54g router, I get a message that says “The public port cannot be 88 because it will have a collision with the wireless Router web service”. Any advice on what I’m doing wrong would be SUPER APPRECIATED!!! Thanks.

My adsl Modem is an actual Router itself and i didnt know at all if is was XBOX live Compatible. i tried connecting to games and it was always saying connection lost. so i checked it out and NAT was Strict. so i DMZ my Xbox but still didnt do anything. then thanks to this fine Guide I opened up the three ports and Bam, My NAT was Open and Xbox live is now working like a charm.

thanks a million.

Superb, thanks very much, now have open NAT setting. I have 2 xbox 360’s connected. Do you know if I can set up 2 as they have different IP settings?

i don’t get this i have the wireless game adapter and i cant find any of this udp or tcp and DMZ crap so if anyone could help it’d be greatly appreciated

I have the same problem as comment 26 any suggestions?

My BT voyager 205 router wont let me click on IP routing ot IP addressing
it keeps refreshing the page back to quick start its really getting on my nerves

Very helpful guide, have changed NAT to open now and will hopefelly try it and see if it helps. Thanks!

Hi to all I would like to said a BIG Thanks to this tutorial well I have 2 Xbox 360 connected to the same router and I was having trouble to get connected to Xbox live for some reason the XBL was not let me get both xbox connected but after this tutorial last night I was connected all night without losing my connection thanks again Midnight

Yeah i got the same problem as in comment 26 and 30

Hi Sir, I’ve come across your post after a google search on xbox/iMac internet connection problem.

I had the NAT problem before and found a website that explained what you just did and it worked great to open my NAT on XBL.

But I have a question for you… I have this problem that it appear when I download something on XBL, the Internet connection on pc/mac is lost… I’ve seen another person having this problem on a forum, no answer so I thought I should talk to you about this and see if you have any clue…

If you have any idea please reply to me on my e-mail, thanks!

Thanks alot for your help, may NAT settings changed to strict the other week and ive been pulling my hair out ever since reading other peoples instructions…. but the way you wrote it was idiot proof and worked. Thanks again

thank you so much i opend my router ports and i went from strict to moderaet..then i did the dmz and it went to open.thank u ur more help than linksys

I’ve looking on the internet for a long time now trying to figure out how fix this problem. I have dmz on. port forwarding, port triggering, everything! I have the linksys router but it is a ver 6. and xbox.com said that only ver 1,2,3 are compatible. so I’m guessing that is the problem. I called linksys and they said that you can’t change NAT because it is embedding into the router. I’ve had it say open but it acts still if it moderate.

Seriously, this is great i found my problem after about an hour or so on the xbox forums when no one replied i went through my settings, finding it was my NAT problem i searched and found this site, this has helped me sooo much thanks mate :-)

Hi, I’ve just finished reading how to make your router compatible with xbox live.
I was wondering if you had any idea if it was absolutely vital to use the xbox adapter or if any network adapter would work with the xbox?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sam

Doesn’t work for me and I’ve tried everything, I’ve even put DMZ on and port forwarded it at the same time.. I’ve got a D-Link DI-804.. oh well…

I found some firmware now.. from http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/Download/download.aspx?product=DI-804&revision=REV_A&filetype=Firmware
but for some reason when i try and install it it just says ” cant find any router” so yeah… can anyone help me with that? Cause i think i might be able to get it to work if I can install the firmware

You are amazing! Thanks for the help. I spent so much time on the phone with the Belkin customer support in India and they had NO CLUE what to do. I appreciate the help.

This reply is for Niruz, or anyone else that had a d-link router and is having problems with the firewall rules.

side note. The first thing I would do would set up a static IP address for your Xbox 360.

now to the dlink issue.
Some d-links have a problem with firewall rules, and when applying them, they don’t always work correctly. A work around for this to us the “Virtual Server”. Delete your firewall rules that you created for XBL. Then create the same rules using the “Virtual Server”. This should fix you up. Again, I can’t stress this enough. Use a static IP address for your Xbox.

i copied wat u did on the screen and it said that public port 88 conflicts with the wireless router. I called my router company and they said to use 87 instead. hopefully it works

Does the private IP address you use the computers or Xbox 360 console’
s? Iask because I am getting a message where 88 confilcts with my routers wireless feature. Thanks in advance. :)

you really don’t need to worry about port 88 incoming. port 88 is used for for kerberos. you just want to make sure that your outbound traffic isn’t being blocked to port 88. As far as being able to host games; you do want to make sure that port 3074 allows inbound and outbound traffic.

I have actiontec modem and I can’t figure out how to configure my modem to open up those ports. The assholes are trying to make me pay extra to help me to open them. Please help me.

how would you do this for a regular xbox?

what if i have 2 xboxs on the same router what do i do please email me with help

Omg! thank U SO MUCH, if tried port forwarding b4, but none of the descriptions were as elaberite as this. THANK!YOU!

Many thanks for your well-written guide! I would just echo an earlier comment — if you’re going to assign your Xbox to the DMZ, it should have a permanent IP address instead of DCHP-assigned.

Is there anyway you can make the screen shot #2 a little bigger. Is that 68-68 or 88-88?

thank you sooooo much. i go to a computer school, and even i don’t want to deal with those settings. My gaming experience is much better because of you.

hiya, not a big hotshot with all this xbox 360 live.i have a linksys router,i think it is a wrt54gc.i cant even get connected to xbl.i have to tried to read your instructions but struggling to understand it all.thnks

If I follow instructions I can get setting from moderate to open but I have to reset my router every single time I turn on my xbox. I have a Linksys WRT54G.

I really appreciate your help, you totally rock,… you’ve broken it down so to speak into plain potatoes head language for everyone to understand. Thank you.

But what if when I go to the settings on my Xbox and it says OPEN, yet still acts this way? Will this still help me?

If not, then can you prescribe what to do?

THANKS!

For a lot of people (me included) the problem is that their entire network (which in my case covers several thousand homes) are behind routers using NAT.
This means that following your otherwise great guide doesn’t actually help, since the routers that need to be configured aren’t accessible.
The only solution is to get another internet connection or (if available) pay for your own IP.

This is no criticism of your guide, just a headsup to people who can’t make it work.

Seriously mate….i love u it now works woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

thanks fer the help. easy to follow and nailed the problem!

I just upgraded from an old Linksys portable wireless router about the size of my wallet..heh…to the new Belkin N1 wireless router http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=273526 (which other than my Xbox Live problem I love!), but for some reason I can’t even connect to XBL anymore! During network setup it will pass like a champ on everything and give me the “moderate” NAT setting, but when I go to connect to XBL it fails! So I run the network test again, and XBL fails..its getting all the way to XBL during the testing, but failing there. Its not even getting to NAT anymore! I’m so confused! I’m even an IT in the Navy and I’m confused…haha (or maybe that’s WHY I’m confused.)

I’m having the same exact problem as 62. If anybody has any solutions that’d be amazing.

I am really hoping this helps - I’m tired of hearing my kid say “I can’t join again!“, or “hey Logan - is your mike broken? Logan?”.
Thank you for the easy to follow instructions and the explanation of what “could” happen and why I shouldn’t worry about it.
Great job!

i need any1s help on this mainly coz i got xbox live bt home hub a wireless connetor (the thing tht goes on the bk of the console)
and it wont let me find my ip address and i no im gonna hav problems with the other things aswell how do i find thm coz i went to my syestem and network settings and there just 0.0.0.0 basicly blank witch i no is wrong how can i find my addresses som1 help

Okay, i have a linksys WRT549, and i have heard that this doesnt work for it, because it is certefied. Well, i looked at my firmware version and sure enough i have it up to cuurent date, running v3.03.6 should i go on with this, because i would rather not if i dont have to Thanks for any replies i might get.

yeah much help with the blog i have been trying to explain this to many people, but an easier way to find your router IP address is go to start menu->run(type in “command”)-. then type in ipconfig and check your default gateway number. also some motorola passwords are set to “god”

There is another way which is easer. I believe all routers have a setting to turn on UPnP (Universal Plug and Play). On most routers it off by turning it on it will allow the Xbox to make the necessary changes to have the NAT open. But be warned that some programs and hardware have the same ability and open ports that you may not want open. So please check you computer and make sure any programs that has UPnP ability, that you don’t want the program to make any changes turn the setting on the program off. If the router does not have UPnP then do what Midnight said either way it works. So everyone take care and Midnight thanks for the blog you pointed me in the right direction.

Ok…i followed your method thingy…
but im so sure it worked
=/

Problem is…
My Router i on the list of supposrted 360 routers page [Linksys BEFSR41 (v3)] but my firmware is 2.00.1 and it only supports 1.04.8 and 1.05.00

I am able to connect to games on Xbox live, but after a [random] amount of time, i am logged out

ANY help would be HIGHLY appreciated…
as i dont have the patience for customer support
=D

Great post! This is really helpful information and XBox Live is the best way to play!

OMG! This post was so helpful… I have been having problems for so long and this fixes everything! If you’re ever on XBOX Live send me a friend invite (Phoenix57775). You Rock!!!!

This worked an absolute charm - thanks a lot :).

When i type in the XBL with the 88 port number it says that i cant use it cuz it will conflict the wireless internet. And also i cant find my xbox IP address. What do i do?

nice dude but 1 problem i did all that and i still lag oand or get no connectivity at times i got a belkins wireless G plus MIMO i tried alot of things so far including your guide not 1 has worked any idea?

I have a Belkin router, and no matter how many times I try to use the DMZ settings my router’s NAT is set to strict. I dont know what else to do.

Good guide, but I could not find the answer to a question.
‘will exposing the xbox360 outside in the DMZ expose it to viruses, eg I suspect the 3 red lights breakdown on 360 recently was a xbox virus (happened after I did a download on 360)’. ‘

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Much better than xbox.com’s suggestion to buy an xbox live supported router. You saved me a trip to the store!

thanks for the info! It worked just as you said, now its more open than a 10 dollar hooker!

im having trouble, i cant play cod4 online, it just constantly searches for a game then gets game quailty and then starts over again, ive port forwarded xbox live on my BT Home hub (which appears to be crap) and still nothing, my NAT also is “open” according to the xbox live test, but when i play pes 08 online it warns me its set to strict or moderate… any ideas? thanks

i can not get the user name and password to work. i have a comtrend ADSL2+ router (CT-5621). i called the provider and they said they would have to come out and configure it them selves and that would cost around 80 dollars. and I was wondering if Midnight could help me with this problem. please write back soon i am tired of putting countless dollars into my 360. HELP!!!!!!!!

i have a linksys WRT54GS router, any ive tried but not sure if i did it correctly any idea?>

Thanks HEAPS! i have a Linksys BEFSR41 v4 and this WORKED great for me !!

i have a linksys WRT54GS. my NAT became open but i still can’t log on to xbox live. u think u can help me

Thank you very much for this great help and easy to follow instruction. I was getting strange warning messages on Halo 3 about NAT not being opened when first beginning a matchmaking search, but it all went away now. Thanks again.

Good Looks man, the strict shyt was getting really annoying, but this site def helped, nd now i got open.

I was having NAT problems any time i played Halo 3 or Gears of War. I ran the test on my xbox 360 live connection and found my router was set to moderate NAT.
I had properly set port forwarding but it still didn’t set the open NAT. after reading your article I tweaked a few settings like you suggest and re-ran the xbox live connection test. I am now running an open NAT. thank you so much!!

hey man i was jus wondering how do i find out my FTP servers IP coz in that pic you have 6 in the box , is it the same for me or is mine different

I have searched for hours and hours for a solution to the NAT router issue. I did what you said and changed the settings on the router and the NAT is open. You are a genius!!! Thank You.

can you have two 360 with two xbox live members working at the same time eg one playing online in one room and another in another room

Chris: yes.

THANK YOU!!!! Big help. Really.

I LOVE U MAN THANX TO U MY NAT IS FINALLY OPEN I COULD KISS U, LOL

The DMZ tidbit was wonderful !!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOU HELP AND TIME !! This website is great. I wasn’t able to connect with certain friends on HALO 3, and now that my ports are open… VIOLA! Thanks again. BTW, this was the first time I ever even heard of half of this stuff, so if there’s someone out there who is intimidated by techno-language, this will be a cake walk. It was good for me and I have an older Belkin router. Thanks, bro.

phenomenal review i can never get these kinds of things to work but this worked perfectly. thanks

Hey thanks :D I have a Belkin thingy too so I have that DMZ thing… I’ll try this at christmas when I get my wireless connector :) When I borrowed my mates it came out as moderate on the NAT thing so this hopefully will change it wooooo
