Make Your Router Xbox Live Compatible

NAT
Update: the new xbox experience (NXE), aka the new dashboard interface with the cool little cartoon characters, has made this guide somewhat obsolete. You can no longer view NAT settings while testing your XBL connection. I recommend that anyone experiencing problems still tweak his router settings according to the methods in this article. If that does not fix the problem, using an Xbox Live compatible router from the official list (linked here) may be your only recourse. Good luck.
——–

Have you ever unsuccessfully tried to find a friend’s game on Xbox Live even though you knew it was there? Have you ever been unable to join a friend’s XBL game when he sent you an invite? Have you ever been in a pregame lobby and been unable to hear the voice communications of other players? I think we’ve all experienced problems like the ones above. They are frustrating to encounter and even more frustrating to troubleshoot. However, most problems of this nature can be traced to NAT (Network Address Translation). Read on to find the solution.

What is NAT? From a helpful page on xbox.com:

When multiple devices share a single Internet connection (a PC and an Xbox 360â„¢ system, for instance), the networked devices typically rely on Network Address Translation (NAT) to prevent information traffic jams.

Routers with different NAT settings don’t like to talk to each other. Think of this like high school cliques. The most snobbish NAT setting is “strict.” Routers with this setting are like Abercrombie and Fitch models. In addition to being unusually thin, they are extremely discerning in whom they talk to, and when a router with a NAT setting of “open” asks to connect, it’ll probably get rejected. The “open” NAT setting is the most forgiving. Think of routers with this setting like a bus station skank. Yeah, it may catch a disease once in a while, but it sees a lot of action. It doesn’t reject anybody, and besides its monthly trip to the clinic for free profilactics it’s always available for online gaming. Somewhere in the middle is the NAT setting of “moderate.” Routers with this setting are like the kids that live at Hot Topic. These routers are very mysterious and often grow up to produce indie punk rock into their early thirties. Nobody really knows what’s going on inside the “moderate” setting. It’s more strict than “open” and it’s more open than “strict.” Exactly what level of noncompliance trips the switch to “moderate” is anybody’s guess. Here’s a handy chart of what NAT settings can talk to each other.

NAT

The bottom line is that if your network uses a router the following is probably true:
1. It needs to use NAT.
2. NAT may cause Xbox Live connectivity problems.
3. You can fix the possible problems by tweaking a few settings.

How do you determine if NAT is the source of the internet gremlins that are stealin’ yer voice packets? One of the easiest ways is to see if your router has been certified by the Xbox team as Xbox Live compatible. This is a free program Microsoft offers to network equipment manufacturers to help them get their equipment XBL compliant. The company sends the Xbox team sample equipment and the Xbox team works with the company to get their router within spec. After it is compliant, the company can sport the “Xbox Live Compatible” logo. See the list of certified Xbox Live compatible routers here. If you are one of the many people who’s router is not on the “officially approved” list, like myself, then read on.

Power on your Xbox 360, boot to the dashboard, and pull up the “network settings” tab. Perform the “Xbox Live Connection Test” and note the last field at the bottom of the screen for “NAT.” If you connect successfully and the NAT value returned is “moderate” or “strict” then it is probably the source of your woes. As you can see below, my router returned a setting of “moderate.”

NAT

Microsoft has a support page to help you with your NAT settings. The prescribed solution is to “open” the following ports on your router:
• UDP 88
• UDP 3074
• TCP 3074

By “open” I mean forward traffic on those ports to your Xbox 360 console. First, you need to find the local IP of your Xbox 360 console. You can get this from the network settings tab in the dashboard. It’s probably 192.168.x.x Now, login to your router’s admin panel. If you’ve never done this, refer to your router’s user manual. It’s not difficult at all. If you’re absolutely too lazy or unable to find the manual, try the following:

1. Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser’s address bar. If that doesn’t bring up your router’s admin panel try 192.168.1.100 or 192.168.2.1
2. When you get the login screen for your router try the following common default user name/ password combinations

UN: admin
PW: admin

UN: admin
PW: blank (I mean literally, leave it blank)

PW only: blank

3. The above attempts are a last ditch effort because you won’t google your router’s model number, so stop complaining that it doesn’t work for you.

After you get logged in there are a plethora of settings to screw up…err… tweak. You’re looking for a setting that says port forwarding, virtual servers, UPnP forwarding, or something similar. Bottom line is find a screen that looks like the one below, and enter the above settings in addition to your console’s IP address. As you can see, my console’s IP is 192.168.2.3.

NAT

Hit apply, submit, or whatever button is applicable and see if you broke anything. Nothing on fire? Good. Rerun the Xbox Live Connection Test in the dashboard and see if it improved your NAT setting. In my case, my Belkin router has a cool setting called “DMZ” under the firewall settings. It allows me to effectively place one local IP address (device) outside the NAT settings of the rest of the network. It appears to be specifically inserted for situations when the “NAT feature is causing problems with an application such as a game.”

NAT

I’m not worried about the risks of someone hacking my Xbox 360, because if they do they’ve made a huge discovery and will be blogging about it at xboxscene.com anyway. I told it to exclude my Xbox 360 from NAT, reran the test, and my NAT setting changed to “open.” Woot!

NAT

These directions won’t work for everyone. Actually, there’s a decent chance that you’ll screw something up during this process and temporarily kill your XBL connectivity or even your internet connection. If you do, just find the hard reset button on your router (this will return the router to default settings) and cut your losses. You also may need to restart some or all of your networking equipment for the new settings to take effect. This is as easy as unplugging the device from AC power and plugging it back in. Networking is a mystical art full of surprises. Dive in, change some settings, and figure out what’s happening inside that Pandora’s Box of packets. There’s nothing you can do that $60 and a trip to Best Buy won’t fix.

I’m sure this will be very useful for a lot of people.

FYI: Midnight Hour one year anniversary this month, no?

Thanks for the pity comment, Matt. I think this type of stuff is just far outside my reader base’s scope of interest. Now, had I cracked a joke about someone breaking their hip, that would have garnered eight or more comments.

The one year anniversary of my blog was actually in late January. Thanks for reminding me. I had forgotten.

Extremely well written guide. Been having this annoying problem for a rather long time now. Giving this a whirl, hopefully everything will work out now *crosses fingers*

Thanks again

Great stuff, however it didn’t work for my Linksys WRT54G. This was a major help though.

Your WRT54G is on the official XBL compatible router list (see link above)! It’s probably your firmware. The link says you must be running either version 3.01.3 or 3.03.6 If your firmware is out of date there is probably an autoupdate option in your router settings.

I have a WRT54G. There are several versions of it and not all of them are on the list, assuming I read it right. My v5 is not on the list, and the latest firmware for it is 1.01.xxx. I have not run the tests though so I don’t know how the NAT on mine is configured. There is a firmware update page on the router, but you have to download the *.bin manually.

Thanks for the clarification, Rev. I forgot to make the distinction between versions.

As a matter of fact, it was the firmaware. I was in need of an update. After the firmware update, XBL was running nice and smooth with open NAM. Thanks a lot!

I have a WRT54G as well my starting ip address is 192.168.1.100, how do I find my consoles IP address, because I entered the one above as Linksys directed me to, but it simply isn’t doing anything. I also downloaded the latest firmware and completely turned the router firewall off to no avail. Great guide by the way.

Find your Xbox 360’s IP address:
1. Pull up your 360 dashboard
2. System tab
3. Network settings
4. Edit settings
5. IP address is displayed on the right.

very very helpful even a computer illiterate like me had my xbox running perfectly with this guide thanks a ton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As soon as I had the correct IP address it worked like a charm, can’t thank you enough!

Thanks for the tip on the belkin router it really helped me i got the n1 which was a problem at first but they managed to get the right software and it came already in the new firmware. me and my friend always played since the first xbox and never had a problem with the linksys and when i upgraded i started playing with him and i could not private chat with him or anything i also called microsoft and they told em to restart and restart and whatever. it is best that ourselves as individuals can solve our own issues because we count on the companies to do it and its done wrong all the time.

I fuckin love you :)

Thanks for the info, it’s really usefull as my xbox claims I have a strict connection. My router settings page however, looks different to that (Also belkin)

thank you at last a site that runs through it simply i sooo crap at tech things on a pc but this was easy did not no you could us dmz 4 xbox 360 now every things open gears of war here i come thank you

awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the most annoying thing for me thus far, is that I have a fair understanding of networking, and thought it was ok that my crusty old ADSL 1 modem had NAT setting of strict with my 10 port Dlink switch.

So I looked up Xbox compatibility page, and found this:

BEFSR41 (v3) 1.04.8, 1.05.00 Wired only

So I bought it. The Firmware version of 1.04.8 is very old, and mine is the latest. It is wired only and everything is same as Xbox said. However, I have changed the DMZ, I have done port forwarding, and have done EVERYTHING I am aware of to fix this NAT sh#t, and its still strict. Now im $80 down on a stupid piece of plastic I didnt need!!

Can anyone help me please! im going insane. I called Xbox assistance and have never spoken to anyone so rude in my life. I spoke to Linksys, and they were even more rude. Im on the verge of throwing my almost totally useless xbox 360 off the top of a building.

I have an older ADSL Dlink modem (model 300 something) plugged into my Linksys BEFSR41. Could it be my Dlink modem that is creating a NAT setting of Strict? it cant be the router!

Please, please help!

ok i have a problem i follow all these steps but, i don’t remember my username or password i put in when i first installed my linksys router what can i do to find this information?

HEy, awesome job on the write up. Now for the true test- actually playing the game to see if it does the trick!

John:

The problem is definately the ADSL “modem”… they aren’t actually modems at all as the connection is digital all the way through, they are actually routers, and have NAT built in to them.

The fix is to connect to the modem and change the NAT settings as described in the guide. If it’s sufficiently old, you will have to telnet into it and change it through the command line, as they did not have web interfaces.

In my first aDSL setup I had a Cisco router (modem) and changing the settings was extremely difficult. If you aren’t tech-savvy my suggestion is to first call your ISP and see if they can help you change your settings, and if not, see if they can upgrade you to a newer modem, most of which have web-based configuration interfaces.

i have WRT54G also and i cant find where u are soposed to put your consol ip and all that stuff

k so i found where im soposed to put all the information in but what info should i put in im a little nervis to just start throwin random shit in there

Niec job with the site–I have a small problem with the port forwarding issue maybe you can help with. When I enter the settings as suggested with my Belkin54g router, I get a message that says “The public port cannot be 88 because it will have a collision with the wireless Router web service”. Any advice on what I’m doing wrong would be SUPER APPRECIATED!!! Thanks.

My adsl Modem is an actual Router itself and i didnt know at all if is was XBOX live Compatible. i tried connecting to games and it was always saying connection lost. so i checked it out and NAT was Strict. so i DMZ my Xbox but still didnt do anything. then thanks to this fine Guide I opened up the three ports and Bam, My NAT was Open and Xbox live is now working like a charm.

thanks a million.

Superb, thanks very much, now have open NAT setting. I have 2 xbox 360’s connected. Do you know if I can set up 2 as they have different IP settings?

i don’t get this i have the wireless game adapter and i cant find any of this udp or tcp and DMZ crap so if anyone could help it’d be greatly appreciated

I have the same problem as comment 26 any suggestions?

My BT voyager 205 router wont let me click on IP routing ot IP addressing
it keeps refreshing the page back to quick start its really getting on my nerves

Very helpful guide, have changed NAT to open now and will hopefelly try it and see if it helps. Thanks!

Hi to all I would like to said a BIG Thanks to this tutorial well I have 2 Xbox 360 connected to the same router and I was having trouble to get connected to Xbox live for some reason the XBL was not let me get both xbox connected but after this tutorial last night I was connected all night without losing my connection thanks again Midnight

Yeah i got the same problem as in comment 26 and 30

Hi Sir, I’ve come across your post after a google search on xbox/iMac internet connection problem.

I had the NAT problem before and found a website that explained what you just did and it worked great to open my NAT on XBL.

But I have a question for you… I have this problem that it appear when I download something on XBL, the Internet connection on pc/mac is lost… I’ve seen another person having this problem on a forum, no answer so I thought I should talk to you about this and see if you have any clue…

If you have any idea please reply to me on my e-mail, thanks!

Thanks alot for your help, may NAT settings changed to strict the other week and ive been pulling my hair out ever since reading other peoples instructions…. but the way you wrote it was idiot proof and worked. Thanks again

thank you so much i opend my router ports and i went from strict to moderaet..then i did the dmz and it went to open.thank u ur more help than linksys

I’ve looking on the internet for a long time now trying to figure out how fix this problem. I have dmz on. port forwarding, port triggering, everything! I have the linksys router but it is a ver 6. and xbox.com said that only ver 1,2,3 are compatible. so I’m guessing that is the problem. I called linksys and they said that you can’t change NAT because it is embedding into the router. I’ve had it say open but it acts still if it moderate.

Seriously, this is great i found my problem after about an hour or so on the xbox forums when no one replied i went through my settings, finding it was my NAT problem i searched and found this site, this has helped me sooo much thanks mate :-)

Hi, I’ve just finished reading how to make your router compatible with xbox live.
I was wondering if you had any idea if it was absolutely vital to use the xbox adapter or if any network adapter would work with the xbox?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sam

Doesn’t work for me and I’ve tried everything, I’ve even put DMZ on and port forwarded it at the same time.. I’ve got a D-Link DI-804.. oh well…

I found some firmware now.. from http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/Download/download.aspx?product=DI-804&revision=REV_A&filetype=Firmware
but for some reason when i try and install it it just says ” cant find any router” so yeah… can anyone help me with that? Cause i think i might be able to get it to work if I can install the firmware

You are amazing! Thanks for the help. I spent so much time on the phone with the Belkin customer support in India and they had NO CLUE what to do. I appreciate the help.

This reply is for Niruz, or anyone else that had a d-link router and is having problems with the firewall rules.

side note. The first thing I would do would set up a static IP address for your Xbox 360.

now to the dlink issue.
Some d-links have a problem with firewall rules, and when applying them, they don’t always work correctly. A work around for this to us the “Virtual Server”. Delete your firewall rules that you created for XBL. Then create the same rules using the “Virtual Server”. This should fix you up. Again, I can’t stress this enough. Use a static IP address for your Xbox.

i copied wat u did on the screen and it said that public port 88 conflicts with the wireless router. I called my router company and they said to use 87 instead. hopefully it works

Does the private IP address you use the computers or Xbox 360 console’
s? Iask because I am getting a message where 88 confilcts with my routers wireless feature. Thanks in advance. :)

you really don’t need to worry about port 88 incoming. port 88 is used for for kerberos. you just want to make sure that your outbound traffic isn’t being blocked to port 88. As far as being able to host games; you do want to make sure that port 3074 allows inbound and outbound traffic.

I have actiontec modem and I can’t figure out how to configure my modem to open up those ports. The assholes are trying to make me pay extra to help me to open them. Please help me.

how would you do this for a regular xbox?

what if i have 2 xboxs on the same router what do i do please email me with help

Omg! thank U SO MUCH, if tried port forwarding b4, but none of the descriptions were as elaberite as this. THANK!YOU!

Many thanks for your well-written guide! I would just echo an earlier comment — if you’re going to assign your Xbox to the DMZ, it should have a permanent IP address instead of DCHP-assigned.

Is there anyway you can make the screen shot #2 a little bigger. Is that 68-68 or 88-88?

thank you sooooo much. i go to a computer school, and even i don’t want to deal with those settings. My gaming experience is much better because of you.

hiya, not a big hotshot with all this xbox 360 live.i have a linksys router,i think it is a wrt54gc.i cant even get connected to xbl.i have to tried to read your instructions but struggling to understand it all.thnks

If I follow instructions I can get setting from moderate to open but I have to reset my router every single time I turn on my xbox. I have a Linksys WRT54G.

I really appreciate your help, you totally rock,… you’ve broken it down so to speak into plain potatoes head language for everyone to understand. Thank you.

But what if when I go to the settings on my Xbox and it says OPEN, yet still acts this way? Will this still help me?

If not, then can you prescribe what to do?

THANKS!

For a lot of people (me included) the problem is that their entire network (which in my case covers several thousand homes) are behind routers using NAT.
This means that following your otherwise great guide doesn’t actually help, since the routers that need to be configured aren’t accessible.
The only solution is to get another internet connection or (if available) pay for your own IP.

This is no criticism of your guide, just a headsup to people who can’t make it work.

Seriously mate….i love u it now works woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

thanks fer the help. easy to follow and nailed the problem!

I just upgraded from an old Linksys portable wireless router about the size of my wallet..heh…to the new Belkin N1 wireless router http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=273526 (which other than my Xbox Live problem I love!), but for some reason I can’t even connect to XBL anymore! During network setup it will pass like a champ on everything and give me the “moderate” NAT setting, but when I go to connect to XBL it fails! So I run the network test again, and XBL fails..its getting all the way to XBL during the testing, but failing there. Its not even getting to NAT anymore! I’m so confused! I’m even an IT in the Navy and I’m confused…haha (or maybe that’s WHY I’m confused.)

I’m having the same exact problem as 62. If anybody has any solutions that’d be amazing.

I am really hoping this helps - I’m tired of hearing my kid say “I can’t join again!“, or “hey Logan - is your mike broken? Logan?”.
Thank you for the easy to follow instructions and the explanation of what “could” happen and why I shouldn’t worry about it.
Great job!

i need any1s help on this mainly coz i got xbox live bt home hub a wireless connetor (the thing tht goes on the bk of the console)
and it wont let me find my ip address and i no im gonna hav problems with the other things aswell how do i find thm coz i went to my syestem and network settings and there just 0.0.0.0 basicly blank witch i no is wrong how can i find my addresses som1 help

Okay, i have a linksys WRT549, and i have heard that this doesnt work for it, because it is certefied. Well, i looked at my firmware version and sure enough i have it up to cuurent date, running v3.03.6 should i go on with this, because i would rather not if i dont have to Thanks for any replies i might get.

yeah much help with the blog i have been trying to explain this to many people, but an easier way to find your router IP address is go to start menu->run(type in “command”)-. then type in ipconfig and check your default gateway number. also some motorola passwords are set to “god”

There is another way which is easer. I believe all routers have a setting to turn on UPnP (Universal Plug and Play). On most routers it off by turning it on it will allow the Xbox to make the necessary changes to have the NAT open. But be warned that some programs and hardware have the same ability and open ports that you may not want open. So please check you computer and make sure any programs that has UPnP ability, that you don’t want the program to make any changes turn the setting on the program off. If the router does not have UPnP then do what Midnight said either way it works. So everyone take care and Midnight thanks for the blog you pointed me in the right direction.

Ok…i followed your method thingy…
but im so sure it worked
=/

Problem is…
My Router i on the list of supposrted 360 routers page [Linksys BEFSR41 (v3)] but my firmware is 2.00.1 and it only supports 1.04.8 and 1.05.00

I am able to connect to games on Xbox live, but after a [random] amount of time, i am logged out

ANY help would be HIGHLY appreciated…
as i dont have the patience for customer support
=D

Great post! This is really helpful information and XBox Live is the best way to play!

OMG! This post was so helpful… I have been having problems for so long and this fixes everything! If you’re ever on XBOX Live send me a friend invite (Phoenix57775). You Rock!!!!

This worked an absolute charm - thanks a lot :).

When i type in the XBL with the 88 port number it says that i cant use it cuz it will conflict the wireless internet. And also i cant find my xbox IP address. What do i do?

nice dude but 1 problem i did all that and i still lag oand or get no connectivity at times i got a belkins wireless G plus MIMO i tried alot of things so far including your guide not 1 has worked any idea?

Good guide, but I could not find the answer to a question.
‘will exposing the xbox360 outside in the DMZ expose it to viruses, eg I suspect the 3 red lights breakdown on 360 recently was a xbox virus (happened after I did a download on 360)’. ‘

i can not get the user name and password to work. i have a comtrend ADSL2+ router (CT-5621). i called the provider and they said they would have to come out and configure it them selves and that would cost around 80 dollars. and I was wondering if Midnight could help me with this problem. please write back soon i am tired of putting countless dollars into my 360. i have a linksys WRT54GS. my NAT became open but i still can’t log on to xbox live. u think u can help me

Thank you very much for this great help and easy to follow instruction. I was getting strange warning messages on Halo 3 about NAT not being opened when first beginning a matchmaking search, but it all went away now. Thanks again.

Good Looks man, the strict shyt was getting really annoying, but this site def helped, nd now i got open.

I was having NAT problems any time i played Halo 3 or Gears of War. I ran the test on my xbox 360 live connection and found my router was set to moderate NAT.
I had properly set port forwarding but it still didn’t set the open NAT. after reading your article I tweaked a few settings like you suggest and re-ran the xbox live connection test. I am now running an open NAT. thank you so much!!

Chris: yes.

I LOVE U MAN THANX TO U MY NAT IS FINALLY OPEN I COULD KISS U, LOL

The DMZ tidbit was wonderful !!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOU HELP AND TIME !! This website is great. I wasn’t able to connect with certain friends on HALO 3, and now that my ports are open… VIOLA! Thanks again. BTW, this was the first time I ever even heard of half of this stuff, so if there’s someone out there who is intimidated by techno-language, this will be a cake walk. It was good for me and I have an older Belkin router. Thanks, bro.

phenomenal review i can never get these kinds of things to work but this worked perfectly. thanks

Hey thanks :D I have a Belkin thingy too so I have that DMZ thing… I’ll try this at christmas when I get my wireless connector :) When I borrowed my mates it came out as moderate on the NAT thing so this hopefully will change it wooooo

Woa! The more I Proliferate in the xbox world, the more you pop up! I dont know if you remember me, but I had to say this looks really great and I hope it solves my current networking problems. For help beyond this, I say thanks!

USE DMZ! I have a Linksys WRT54G and it has the DMZ option mentioned in this tutorial. If you’re having trouble, follow his directions to access your router settings, then go to the DMZ tab under Applications and Gaming … enable DMZ and enter your XBOX IP address (Dashboard, System Tab, Network Settings, Edit Settings). BIZARRO!

My WRT54G works just fine with XBOX live and i havnt done anything it a ver 6

the 88 port on mine doesnt work i have exactly the same belkin set up as you but it says “the public port number can not be 88. Becuase it will have a collision with the Wireless Router web servie” HELP PLEASE

Hi Midnight,

After 2 days of trying with Xbox support, nothing worked until I Googled ‘XBox 360 Router Problems’ and bingoooo!!!. Found your suggestions and now it’s connected. Thought my ‘old’ DLink router (DI-714P+) was ‘incompatible’ but you just made it ‘compatible’!!!!
Thanks a million!!!

On the second port for the inbound and private, I put in 88 and a error message comes up saying

“The public port number can not be 88. Because it will have a collision with the wireless router web service”

that doesnt sound to good any suggestions?

my ip adress of my xbox constantly changes for some reason so i can do this

and when i try it tells me that i can only do lan ip’s

worked perfectly on my ZyXEL P-334WT :-D THANKS! ive been trying to conquer this demon since halo 3 came out

It worked great except for one thing; although as soon as I did all that the XBox360 could connect without any problems, we lost internet for the rest of the household so I had to return to the previous settings.
Any more suggestions?

hi mate, luckily i have the same router you are useing. i did mange to chnage my xbl nat to open but it seems that the last digit on my xbox i.p keeps chnaging between 2 and 3, this is obviously effecting my nat because i set the ip on the belkin configuration screen. any ideas on why its happening or how i can make it stick…

Update to MSG 177 .. ok pals, I switched from one excellent Belkin N1 router to one old Netgear Rangemax and the results? I lost some range from 100% to 89% but still is strong for me, the good news are the compatibility and easy to set up, now i have connected two Xbox 360 one wired and one wireless, one nintendo Wii wireless, one PSP, one PS2 wired, one PC desktop wired, one laptop wireless, one nintendo DS and one Ipod internet radio deck, everything is running smooth, even when all of them are running at the same time. Before was easy on the Belkin router open a NAt for one Xbox, but impossible for two, now both of my xbox 360 have an open nat, that means i can play with all my friends. The access to Xbox Live is fast for both of them at the same time. I’ll hope this update help some people looking for choose a router, so never go for the latest technology, go for the technology that you need, look what you have and find the correct router for you. I recommend a Rangemax Netgear G MIMO for the electronics with 802.11 g. Good luck dudes, maybe we can play next time on line I’m GhostB2K and HeroB2K I’ll see you there on Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4.

dude u are awesome solved all my problems

you legend. I cant thankyou enough i havent had any problems at all since I did this and my xbox live is working beautifully

ok so my NAT is moderate and all my friends are strict. i need mine to be open. i get everything your saying except one thing.
Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser’s address bar. If that doesn’t bring up your router’s admin panel try 192.168.1.100 or 192.168.2.1
are you saying to go to D-link.com and login? when i log in does it pull up the router page or whatever? but i didn’t buy the router and i dont think my parents set up an account with d-link?

please respond quickly.

Thank You! This absolutely works for me.

just type 192.168.1.1 into the explorer address bar and it will bring up your router config console, you can do this offline if you wish its not a webpage but actually on the router
you need to enter name and pass
by default this is admin admin
if those names dont work you can stick a pen in the reset hole on the back for 7 seconds to default all the settings (CAUTION!!!! this will remove any settings that the user has added and may stop you from connecting)

HELP PLZ!!! i got into the admin panel for my motorola surfboard SBG900 and those passwords and names u gave didnt work!! anything else i can do?!?

yo josh if you have comcast you can try
user: comcast
pass: 1234

Thanks for the help. I wish I would have had this info much earlier!!!!!!!

I love it.
It helped me wonders, thank you so much man. its exactly what i needed.

i have a belkin router and i am following your instructions on how to set it up but how do i find my ftp server number? i have windows xp service pack 2 , i see yours says 192.168.2.6 in the firewall virtual server. Can you help?

I spent hours on this f’ing problem -> THEN I did ONE crucial step to get (OPEN) Nat Status that you didn’t mention on here!

1rst things first: I have the dreaded BELKIN F5D9230-4 V2 router whose screen is exactly like the pics above. I tried all the port number suggestions and like many others here, I got as far as clicking APPLY n the error dialog box popping up claiming port 88 was reserved for my wireless (wifi)… F@$# right?

2nd, I erased all those port numbers and looked in DMZ settings and did that which still did nada for me -> BUT I STILL LEFT IT ACTIVATED!

Lastly, I searched/tinkered around AK the menues and FOUND the MAGIC SETTING for ME. AT THE BOTTOM LEFT OF THE UTILITIES CONTROL PANEL, it says: “SYSTEM SETTINGS”. I click’d that & then TURNED ON rather “ENABLED” UPNP
ADVANCED FEATURE! (It allows you to turn the UPNP feature of the Router on or off. If you use applications that support UPnP, enabling UPnP will allow these applications to automatically configure the router.)

I Re-Tested XBOX & BOOM -> I’m OPEN! Hope I helped someone…

Purple Chrome, thanks for the first constructive post to this thread in months! I’m gonna see if my router has that subtle nuance. Maybe it’ll help me get both my xboxen to open NATs. Right now one can be open (DMZ) but the other is moderate or strict.

I have a wrt54g2 and ive done everything there has been said to do on here does anyone have one of these routers also that could give me any tips. or is my router just not compatible? email or comment just please some help.

this is #217 just to make clear i do have i pass the test on nat and everything everytime and i have satelite internet but i always lag ultra bad.

very useful opened my nat entirely!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks

this worked perfectly. thankyou.

I’m sorry, but this didn’t help me at all. I followed you’re instructions down to the letter and yet I could not locate a settings screen like the one posted above. I appreciate your efforts but they were in vain.

You are an absolute life saver…..It took me hours of hacking and looking through numerous forums until I stumbled upon this one. Now everything works! THANK YOU!!

This was an excellent article - took me 10 mins to solve a problem plaguing my son for weeks. Thanks so much.

i cant open my router settings page, i could earlier but now it wont open.

why?

In regards to the Belkin router in post 215: I had same problems with getting the thing to open. I did as you suggested and boom it opened. Now it is compatible for like 2 hours or so but sometimes tends to lag me out. My connection doesnt drop I just straight up lag out, one time it even went to strict but just wondering what the prob is. Should I have the suggested ports placed in there too? DMZ enabled with the uNuP? let me know

This was a very useful guide. Worked flawlessly with my unruly router! Thanks lots!

Thanks a lot. worked like a charm on my WRT150N!!

good info if you’re are having these problems, at least someone on the internet isnt talking out of their ass.

I have a Belkin Wireless router G Plus and I got a new networking cable and network card, new Modem from Cox. And I had then reset my modem and I have this conectivity problem for some time now and it’s driving me mad. I hope what you have to say works. Im trying it tonight.

Ok, I opened up my NAT settings on my Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO Router and then I set my XBox 360 up with the DMZ setting. Now it’s open and it worked great….for about 10 minutes. This a extremely frustrating problem. If there is any advice that anyone would give me would be much appreciated. Thank you all.

Ive tried..didnt work for my Belkin wireless g router… but Wat if u got a cheapo an like $30 dollar router because i think my grandmas router that she gave me.. she told me it is like only a $30 dollar router do u think this is my problem so when i get my check for $2100 dollars i can go get me a 100 to 150 dollar router…plus is a 2.0 to 3.5mb connection fast enougth for XBL..

my ip address failed help!!!

Great guide with all of the correct steps to open an NAT. Unfortunately for most of us Linksys WRT54G users, we still are unable to join our friends. I guess I will have to buy a frickin Xbox LIVE Compatible router. I am thinking of the Linksys WRT54GS v2. (if i can find one)

Thanks so much!

it would be your friends problem

Hi i see a few people talking about the linksys wrt54g, i have the same one but a “v8″ and that model number is not compatable with xbox live. Me and my friend can get on and play other people but we can not play each other on any game we have online. We tried madden 08, 09 call of duty 4, and grand theft auto 4. We can’t connect or get in a private chat room. Both of our NAT are open, what else could it be? Thanks for any help

gjghjhghgjh

When I try to change the UDP 88 under the virtual servers it says: “The public port number can not be 88.Because it will have a collision with the Wireless Router web service.” Do you know any way to fix this problem?

@beeni: try https://192.168.x.x instead, because some routers prefer it this way.

@ author: I’m going to try this. Trying costs nothing, right? Sure is cheaper than getting a new router when the list of compatible routers they’ve given in belgium is 3 routers long…

I just wanted to thank you for this. I recently got a new router and was having a hell of a time getting my 360 to connect again. I find it mind boggling that the most helpful information I find is from people like yourself, willing to spend the time to share a guide, and not from xbox.com.

Appreciate it.

Thanks again

Hi mate, really good article and normally loads and loads of help. Sadly, i use a BT (British Telecom) router which was given to me by a relative. Cannot find the manual anywhere nor will those IP things work. Any ideas what else i can try? I have a nat setting of strict. it is annoying.

WOW thank you so much they fixed everything…WOOT OPEN.

I tried all of this and it was working last night but today it started disconnecting again. I also have the ‘DMZ’ setting. Should i do both methods or only do the’DMZ’ setting? I hope that will help me. Thanks.

thxs for that imformation its about time some help out ppl like us xboxlive’res and had the same router as me really helped too thxs bud

Hello. I had FIOS before and after refering to several sites (yours included) I finally got xbl up on my Actiontec router. I recently switched to their new Westell 9100EM and the ##@@%% thing will not even see my 360. Double checked that I am using cat5e - test screen on 360 shows connected, but no IP. Any ideas?

————PLEASE READ————
I had strict nat for a very long time, although my router is apparently xbox live compatible on the xbox live webstite. I spent hours on the phone with my internet providers and none of their information had helped with the fixing of the strict NAT. So, I ended up just fucking around with the thing for a very long time, and it turned out all I had to do was put in the name of my internet provider which is Bell Sympatico. Although my NAT setting is now open, I still constantly lag and disconnect from games. Anyone know whats wrong?

The model of my router is Speedstream 6300 By the way. ^

Hi. I reeally need some help as im not good with computers.
I have have a netgear DG834G that is wireless connected to the xbox.
My NAT is Moderate but cant connect to my friends.
is there anyone out there that can help???
thank kt

Also since xbox has been updated. cannot find what the NAT is now.
Please Help!!!

Is it the same set up if I have a wireless internet? By this i mean, do I have to do anything different with the ports or will it still have the same, open NAT, result.

When multiple devices share a single Internet connection (a PC and an Xbox 360 system, for instance), the networked devices typically rely on Network Address Translation (NAT) to prevent information traffic jams.

And the following solution is for linksys devices Router or Gateway.

1. Open the port no. 88 and 3074 under the “Port Range Forward” tab of the Application and Gaming, with the static ip addrss.
EX: App-xyz, start–88, end–88, Portocal–Both, Ip add–192.168.1.xx(XX represent static ip of the XBOX) wired or wireless does not matter.
If you give static Ip on the Xbox than ip should be like this.
192.168.1.xx, 255.255.255.0, D/g. 192.168.1.1.
Do not forget to turn off the Xbox after you have save setting on the linksys, start the xbox and test the connection if it does not work turn off the Pc’s and try again 2 or 3 times it works.

Cheers for the information! Sorted it in 5 mins thanks to you! Now i can talk and connect to friends at last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is quite helpful, but there is something odd that I could use some help with.

I’m using a Linksys WRT54G router, and it’s IP is set to 192.168.1.1 Now, the only way I can connect my Xbox is by connecting it to my laptop, then using ICS so it can piggyback off my wireless connection. It works great, but it’s got a NAT connection.

I would be DMZ’ing the console and port forwarding, but, well, it’s odd. My laptop has the ICS IP of 192.168.0.1, and my Xbox has the IP of 192.168.0.5, but the router can only modify items of the 192.168.1.* variety. Is there something I can do about this?

Tom, when you say “the only way,” can you define exactly what you mean? My first thought is to connect the Xbox directly to the router. Why is that not an option?

I have no experience with NAT issues using ICS. This is a first.

Just wanted to say thank you for the great description! I learned about the DMZ and I got my NAT working right! Thanks for your time!

You are an absolute legend, I couldn’t get the NAT business set up and I didn’t want the NAT set to open, but I have a Belkin router too which I set the DMZ up for, which has worked perfectly. Thanks a bunch, I never realized about the DMZ.

Very helpful. I wouldn’t have thought to use DMZ. And thank you for isolating the ports to be forwarded. Saved me the hassle of looking it up! I’m sure this will work just fine!

Im having serious problems hooking this up for my brother..
We have wireless internet and it works fine. but when i go onto his xbox and go to the wireless settings i cant click them! I have been working on it for over 3 hours!

How would I check my NAT with the new dashboard? I can’t seem to find it anywhere, but maybe it’s obvious and I’m just not seeing it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ummmmm This Is go info but my nat is open but i still lag out of my games my xbox 360 is hook up to my wireless router and i still lag out i put my wireless router in diff. places and still lag and i no it not my ip address its good…i just don’t no what to do.

Ok so when i typed in my username and my password it said ” 401 Unautorized” help please?

Your guide is very detailed and is very helpful. I have the same Belkin G+ MIMO F5DR293-4 Router. I put the IP adress that shows up when i check my system settings on my XBOX 360 in the DMZ tab. Yet, i still am experiencing problems with my connection. It will periodically drop the connection and disconnect me from games such as Halo.

I don’t know what else to do because when I directly connect the XBOX to the modem, it works beautifully, no problems whatsoever. And I thought the DMZ feature basically was designed to have that same effect yet it isn’t working.

Any help? Please and Thank You.

hey man when i put my xbox ip into DMZ its coming up that the mtu has failed any ideas why?????

Hey,
I have a linksys router. I opened up the port range forwarding, I dont understand what it is i have to do there. Do I enter numbers into the start and end port range or what? Thanks

Yeah!! It worked for me!!

I did manage to totally lose my internet connection at one point but with your suggestion to unplug everything and turn it back on again my Xbox live wireless is up and running smoothly now! Your instructions were much more helpful than any I could find on the Xbox live site!!
Thank you so much.

Hey, I have a Belkin f5d8233 4v3 01. And, I can’t seem to get the NAT off of scrict. I’ve just taken it out of the DMZ but it still doesn’t work. It’ll always say that the TMU (or something of the sort) doesn’t have enough something to connect…

Please, I really need help with this.

Hey, real good info session… i did screw up my settings completely and totally f**k everything. everyone in the house was ready to kill me :S… all good now tho. lol…

Looks like you garnered more than 8 more comments without the broken hip joke… good going….

Hi, my question refers to the two pictures in this article that show the actual screenshot from the xbox dashboard. How do you get to that screen? i have been trying and i cannot find it. any suggestions? and oh - im still not sure how you actually change your NAT to open.

Thanks

PEOPLE I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION TO THE PORT 88 PROBLEM!!!

^^^Ok, just trying to get your attention there^^^

Not sure if anyone has posted this, but here goes:

Basically, try putting in, instead of 88, 8080. I called Belkin and they told me to, and it works. I told a few of my mates and it worked for them also, but I’m not guaranteeing anything! Just try it, it probably will work.

Great advice. Mine is and has been set that way, even with DMZ and it DOES NOT WORK.

Thank you so much for your help. My son has been wanting me to change his NAT settings for the longest and I finally found your site. Thanks a million. This was a perfect gift for me to open his NAT settings so he is able to enjoy his XBOX live even more! Today is his 14th birthday!!!
Thanks again!

i need help with my 360 1.it can’t connect to the ip server i do all the steps but when i check both boxes the same thing allways pops up it say “error occured while internet sharing was being enabled” and this is after i right click my wireless connection and go to properties than the sharing tab and click both boxes (i use vista on my laptop)thank you for reading.

Great step-by-step. I have a belkin router and the instructions worked like a charm! Thanks for the advice, and the screen shots. My Xbox Live account popped right up at full speed. Nice work!

I keep getting this.

“The public port number can not be 88.Because it will have a collision with the Wireless Router web service.”

What’s going wrong >:
