Euphrates and the Children

Posted by Jeff Barnett on March 29th, 2006

Children walking to school along the Euphrates River

Children walk to school next to the Euphrates River. It is hard to tell,
but one of the children is waving at me and I am returning his wave.

By the way, my fifth NYT Select article went live a couple of days ago. You can read it here. It is titled, Junkyards of War.

Let me take this opportunity to say how much I have been enjoying your pictures. This particular one couples the children, whom I have so loved seeing as just kids, and almost unbelievably the the ancient fertile crescent brought forward thousands of years to the present. It almost staggers the imagination.

I appreciate the fact that the marine out front has his gun turned down in the presence of the children.

It is not at all cliché to say “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Thank-you so much for sharing your pictures with us.

Jeff I love all the pictures you have taken there. This one especially. It’s always heartbreaking to see kids involved in any kind of violence but it’s so sweet when you see them show some appreciation and love towards the soldiers who are out there making their lives better.

I keep you guys in my prayers every night, stay safe :)

Nice pic Midnight. It’s good to see something that reminds me of why you and others like you have been sent over there.

Hey there! Been reading your blog, just now getting around to commenting, LOL!

Thank you so much for your service to our country! We keep you all close in prayer and in thought!

I saw your post about “mail from a stranger” and just had to comment about that, too….. Our family routinely “adopts” military personnel deployed all over the place (currently, all our adopted heroes are in Iraq…) and send letters & care packages & stuff all thru the deployment. We are involved with three different organizations, all of which are awesome! If you, or anyone else, would like to be “adopted” by some aweome folks who love and are proud of our military, check out these sites:

www.adoptaplatoon.org (been with them nearly six years now)

You’ll all be spoiled ROTTEN! :)

Hang in there - u r in our prayers. :)
