To Lisa in Italy
I occasionally receive email from readers of my blog. I recently found an email in my inbox from Lisa, a 23-year-old journalism grad student at Rome University. She is doing her graduation research on “blogs from Iraq†and polled a few milbloggers. I thought I would share part of our brief conversation (my answers inserted):
Dear soldiers,
First of all sorry for my English. I’m a 23 years old Italian student of journalism at Rome University and I’m making my graduation research on your blogs from Iraq. I’m reading many of your blogs and I’m writing this mail to many of you hoping you can help me in my work answering to some of my questions. These are the questions:
Q: Why in the first place did you decide to go in Iraq?
A: I am a product of September 11th. To be quite honest I didn’t really understand what was happening on that fateful Tuesday, but after I figured it out it ignited a rage in me that took me through two and a half years of training and thousands of miles to bring me where I sit right now. Make no mistake: I want to be here.
Q: As a soldier you sure thought this war was necessary but, on a personal basis, as a man what was your genuine feeling?
A: My genuine feeling is that this war is necessary for the safety of my nation and my loved ones.
Q: Do you believe that a prolonged American presence in Iraq is necessary?
A: I am an 0-2 and unqualified to comment on the prolonged presence of troops in IZ.
Q: Do you think that the situation is better now in Iraq thanks to you contribution?
A: I know without a doubt the situation in Iraq is better due to my efforts. Fewer terrorists = better.
Q: In general which is the attitude of Iraqi people towards you? How much do they accept your occupation and how much do they hate the Americans? And what are your feelings towards them?
A: I don’t have enough direct experience with the IZ populace to comment on their acceptance of us. The kids love us. That I know for sure.
Q: What is your opinion about the Pentagon’s decision to control every new milblog?
A: I am unaware of any such decision by the Pentagon and would have to read the details before commenting.
Q: If you should use one word to explain your staying in Iraq and your feelings which one would you choose?
A: One word to describe my experience in Iraq so far: satisfying.
Q: What is in Iraq your last thought before to sleep?
A: My last thought before I go to sleep varies. Sometimes it’s my wife. Sometimes it’s a trivial detail of my day. Sometimes it’s a mental replay of the last mission I was on. The mental replays are the toughest to fall asleep to. I usually think of something I could have done better, but we shouldn’t convict ourselves with the wisdom of hindsight, should we?
Lisa, thank you for your interest in my blog and congratulations on nearing the completion of your degree. I hope my brief responses have been useful.
wow the questions could have been asked more NPOV (neutral point of view) in my opinion but maybe that’s just the wikipedia in me coming out?
