Midnight in New York (Times)

Posted by Midnight on March 4th, 2006

Edit: First post is up: http://frontlines.blogs.nytimes.com/?p=7

Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pleasure that I can now announce the exciting news that I alluded to in a previous post. Due to the huge increase in popularity of my blog (any increase from zero has to be considered huge) caused by the diligent efforts of my webmaster, Rapture, “Midnight in Iraq” has received a ton of exposure in the blogosphere as of late. I recently received an email from the editor of the New York Times’ subscription portion of their web site, the Times Select. This email invited me to blog for the Times Select as part of a one-month promotion to publish select military blogs. This has a couple of implications. First, the Times blog will become my focus of effort. “Midnight in Iraq” will not be forgotten during this time, but expect to see posting slow down a bit. This is mainly due to the fact that my posts for the Times Select must remain exclusive to their website. I think this is a reasonable expectation for a subscription based service. However, if you subscribe to the New York Times or the Times Select you will be able to view my blog in its entirety. I will also keep “Midnight in Iraq” updated as new posts are made to the Times blog, and will post a link to their website from here.

This is an exciting opportunity, and I am still in awe that so many of you enjoy reading my mundane, everyday thoughts. It is the continued participation of my readers that makes this blog what it is, and I thank you. Once again, I will not be leaving “Midnight in Iraq” high and dry.

Great news! I look forward to seeing the “real story” being published by the MSM.

HOW COOL!!!!!!!!!

way to sell out to the man :(, the fact that the posts have to remain exlusive is kindof lame IMO.

¿What a sell out?

Pffft

He gets to blog where he will get national exposure, he gets one hell of an interesting bullet point for his resume when he gets back to civilian life, and presumably he’s getting to pick up some extra cash on the side.

Way cool!

This is freakin’ sweet.

Blogs were made for people like you, Jeff, so don’t be so surprised that your “mundane, everyday thoughts” happen to interest a lot people. :)

Exciting news and definitely more interesting to read than embedded reports. Way to go! Looking forward to reading more of your perspective.

Congrats!

wow, very cool man!

Your ” mundane “everyday thoughts and stories have just the right dose of reality, humor, absurity and absurity of the reality to illustrate a colorfull picture for your readers. It helps us understand what you and the other marines in your battalion are going through and provides us a SMALL clue of the difficult mission you have been assigned.

I think you will find, if you haven’t already that your writings will be just as valuable for your sanity and well being for the time your orders place you there.

Congrats on making the NY Times connection.

I’m happy for you. Keep safe. I may not be a huge fan of The NY Times, it’s great that you have this opportunity.

*smile*, well I have given ya all the publicity I could. I posted a rss feed from your blog here on my yahoo 360 page and then again on my tagworld site.. I like what you have to say and thought others would too. Good luck to you. ;)

Midnight, damn that’s cool. I hope you will continue on this site. You can’t forget about it. I know I am the new guy and all, but I can say I knew him when….

I will have to check it out too. It will be interesting to see how it effects this BLOG. Your getting way to popular. Ha! Good luck. Talk to you soon. Xyane.

Congratulations. I find your blog most entertaining. I suppose I will have to pay to read. Be safe and keep up the good work

Wow congrats :) No need to be in shock or surprised, you have an awesome blog and it was only a matter of time before it got snatched up by someone :)

What I love about your blog is that you keep it real and you give us an insight from a soldiers perspective, which to me is more important than someone TRYING to describe what goes on there without actually being present.

Thanks again for everything you do.
God bless and stay safe.

Congrats! Eric told me about this and indicated to me that maybe one day I’ll be as good of a writer as you. One can only hope… In the meantime, as I brush up on my mad-writing skills, I’ll hope to master HALO so that one day, I too can be l33t. Best wishes always!

Just be sure to wash you hands after dealing with the NYT.

Treat them with the same caution you would treat a used car salesman.

Thanks for all the comments.

Jimmie,
Glad to see you made it.

Erin,
I think you would pwn me in a battle of prose. However, you should probably stick to Zuma rather than Halo, as you are already 1337 there.

Sandra,
It’s my continued effort to present things as they really are. I’m not going to dumb things down, make the nice things ugly, or the ugly things nice. I am a realist and I present things as I perceive them. Sometimes that may come off a little raunchy, but that’s the way I roll. I think people enjoy the sincerity and I plan to keep that paramount.

I SO appreciate the sincerity and the reality of everything you post. I think some people have a very distorted idea of what the troops go through.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a military wife, so I truly appreciate EVERYTHING you do, not just the blog but mainly the sacrifices you are making right now just so that we on the homefront can remain safe. Kudos to you!!!

God Bless :)

You really are an excellent writer Jeff, I espire to be as skilled as you are in that area… one day.

I am anxiously awaiting your next NYT post. You stirred things up a bit with the first and the subject matter but it needed to be said. Meanwhile, stay safe and take care.

Kat Von D…

I Googled for something completely different, but found your page…and have to say thanks. nice read….

I am a formal Marine and a Viet Nam vet. I am firmly against the war in Iraq and my question to you is, “Why would a Jew run newspaper ask a Iraq vet to write a blog for it?” My theory is, that it is too speard more lies of the antichrist jew agenda. You know , where the christains believe Jews are God’s chosen people and all that garbage.. How American involvement is saving the world and getting Jesus to come back soon. It reminds me of the politicians back in 1965 saying that the civil rights laws would bring about a better America.. Damn you people will believe anything!

In the Nov. 10, 2007 Q and A session at the NY Times you are quoted as follows: “JEFFREY BARNETT: In my opinion we went into Iraq for the right reason”. No one has pinned down the “real” reason for the Iraq invasion, but it was not WMDs, not the odious dictator, certainly not to promote democracy; it was in fact to turn on the spigot to a relatively pristine pool of Oil. Hence the emphasis on Iraq’s passing the “Oil Law” and the Bush’s determination to stay there forever or at least, until all the oil is pumped. Read chapter 3 of “American Theocracy” by Kevin Phillips
